Why Do My Drains Keep Clogging? Common Culprits

A one-off clog happens to almost every household. A drain that clogs again and again, though, usually has a specific, identifiable cause. Here are the most common ones.

Grease and Fat Down the Kitchen Drain

Grease and cooking fat go down as a liquid but solidify as they cool inside the pipe, gradually narrowing it and catching other debris as it passes through. Even small amounts, poured down repeatedly over time, build up into a real blockage. Letting grease cool and disposing of it in the trash instead of the sink makes a bigger difference than most people expect.

Hair in Bathroom Drains

Hair is one of the most common causes of slow bathroom drains, and it doesn't take much to catch other debris and soap residue as it accumulates. A simple drain cover can catch most of it before it ever reaches the pipe.

Soap Scum Buildup

Bar soap in particular tends to combine with mineral content in water to form a scum that clings to pipe walls, narrowing the passage over time. This tends to be a slower, more gradual clog than hair or grease, which is part of why it often goes unnoticed until the drain is running noticeably slow.

Items That Shouldn't Go Down the Drain

Coffee grounds, food scraps, and so-called "flushable" wipes are common culprits, especially in kitchen and toilet drains. Coffee grounds don't break down and tend to clump; wipes, despite the label, generally don't disintegrate the way toilet paper does and can catch on minor obstructions further down the line.

Root Intrusion in Main Lines

If it's your main line clogging repeatedly rather than a single fixture, tree roots seeking moisture can work their way into small cracks or joints in underground pipe, gradually restricting flow. This is a different kind of problem than a fixture-level clog and typically needs a closer look at the line itself.

Repeated clogs are information. The pattern — which drain, how often, what's nearby — usually points to a specific, fixable cause rather than bad luck.
